Further emphasising the point that guitar instrumental albums are the next big thing for the 21st Century, My Education - a seven-piece from Austin, Texas - pay their homage to the likes of Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor on their debut album. So far so unoriginal one might argue but '5 Popes' is undoubtedly a meticulously arranged, expansive album that its influences would be proud of. Whereas 'Concentration Waltz' is controlled chaos from the outset, the following 'Lesson 3' builds from a languid, dreamy beginning which post-rock supergroup The Sea And Cake would be proud of; it is then swamped by howls of feedback. Full use of the FX-pedal can be heard on 'Nightrider Meets The Waterfall' contrasting nicely with the beautiful yet intense 'Deep Cut', the most satisfying piece of music on the album. 'Crime Story' screams its way to the close of 40 minutes of heavy music; it seems longer than that probably because all of these instrumentals slowly unwind themselves, changing gradually. A compulsive yet exhausting listen.
