Album Reviews
Immense are a five-piece band who specialise in intricate guitar-based instrumentals. From the very opening, in the high-speed playing on 'Football Chant', it could be said that angst-rock afficionados Placebo are a definite influence but the album features many more layers using as much slow and subtle melodies (a la Mogwai) as fragmented shards of brittle guitar heroics. The highlight arrives seven tracks in on 'Spontaneous Combustion'; the complex guitar playing being slow-building, delightful and melancholic at the same time. Naturally as an instrumental album, the interest wanes somewhat but there's no denying the talent that the group shows. The hard work that's gone into this debut album is most ably demonstrated on 'Don't You Know How To Use Flippers?' where an exhausted axe-wielder whines "Don't make me play that again. It hurt!"
