This is post-rock of the resolutely serious kind from Milhaven. Just like their first album 'Bars Closing Down', this follow-up EP is available as a free download. The four tracks can be divided into two camps of varying quality. 'Oh! Great Pacific' pushes all the apocalyptic and stormy buttons and is a typically raging cacophony of guitars whilst the mid-paced 'Clean Room' sounds portentous enough but never quite reaches a peak. Milhaven are better the more they subvert the post-tock stereotypes: the altogether more pleasant and calmer 'Lord Of Birds' begins with a surprisingly beautiful melody and - although it succumbs to the inevitable loudness - its inherent sadness still seems convincing and finally Milhaven show some welcome versatility on 'Firnis' with a lovely, pastoral acoustic melody worthy of Mike Olfield. Still, an album that spends half its time being very good and half the time trotting out the Godspeed! cliches is definitely worth an airing considering its cost.
