'Not The Wheel' is a limited edition Polish release (so not obscure at all then) which collates the work for films and compilations that Germany's Tarwater have produced. Unsurprisingly it's not as cohesive as 2000's excellent 'Animals, Suns & Atoms' album. The best tracks are the ones which feature vocals and it's these which demonstrate their arty knack for teutonic tunefulness, such as the train track rhythms of 'Expected' or the Kraftwerk-like aloof qualities of 'Tommy Tomorrow'. Perhaps the main difference between this album and 'Animals...' is that the instrumental tracks aren't as captivating here. They suffer from the original problem of being taken out of the context of the films they were featured in and some of them finish before they get started. Nevertheless the final pieces are much better as their quirkiness is streamlined into something more vital. An obscure release perhaps, but half of this album is very good indeed.
