The Glass Bead Game

Album Reviews
1999 also witnessed the re-release of Breathless's first two albums. 'The Glass Bead Game' (originally released in 1986) is unmistakably the sound of the same band as the modern version. However, the sound is even more uncommercial than before; Appleton's vocal sounding more sinister and almost mantric at times which fits together well with the omnipresent sense of doom lurking around the corner; perhaps best evidenced on the seven minute-plus 'Monkey Talk'. Featuring Joy Division-like bass guitar and insistent drum patterns this album hasn't aged one jot but be prepared for an uneasy listening experience. 'Three Times And Waving' from the following year will doubtless similarly interest those who bought its predecessor but will also be unlikely to draw in new listeners. 'Into The Fire' is the closest the group sound to being conventional when for once the instrumentation heads into melodic waters rather than bizarre experimentation whilst Appleton's voice sounds almost joyous as it takes centre stage. The arrangements are not quite as disorientating as 'The Glass Bead Game' which make the concept slightly less interesting but nonetheless provide a more than adequate addition to any miserablist's fans music collection.
