Debut albums very rarely sound as polished as 'Here Comes The Sharp Things'. Led by singer, songwriter and pianist Perry Serpa this NYC group are a hearts-on-sleeves outfit who operate in orchestral pop environments like a less alternative-sounding Divine Comedy. Their music may sometimes sound a little too polished and their melodies are not ground-breaking but the arrangements are highly distinguished and well thought out. They sound best at their most understated like on 'It Took Forever To Get Home Tonight' a warm, romantic ballad. 'Vacationing' and 'Right' too benefit from lavish arrangements laced with subtlety. With a sound more on the Deacon Blue side than Prefab Sprout, The Sharp Things are a group of extremely accomplished musicians who will struggle to write real killer tunes but their output is definitely highly accessible.
