Poppy Gonzalez first came to our attention with her former band Dreamfield; a shoegazer-flavoured act with modern ideas. Her new outfit Hush Collector sees her move towards atmospheric country music, making her career run a kind of parallel with former Slowdive/now Mojave 3 member Rachel Goswell. The stylistic change is certainly a better showcase for Gonzalez's vocals; now it's clear that there's more personality in her huskily seductive tones. Of the four tracks on this EP, it is the middle two which stand out: 'Mountain Song' and 'It Don't Matter' showcasing the band's gifts for stirring and slightly unsettling music. An album will surely be a true test of their value but 'Flowby' reveals the promise of a genre switch that has been worthwhile.
