This recording has been described by the Nordic
press as the most exciting Norwegian album ever. In truth this
isn't a boast that most music fans from outside of Norway would
be able to contradict. Garbarek is the daughter of the
saxophonist Jan Garbarek but very little of her father's
influence is shown on this debut effort. A more obvious
contemporary comparison would be Björk or Kate Bush as Garbarek's
voice veers between sinister ice maiden and a six year old child.
Bubbling under this mixture is a variety of whistles and bells on
the production side where strings are just as likely to feature
as modern electronic pulses. With songs revealing great
imagination in their twists and turns like 'The Cabinet' and 'Picking
Up Pieces', Garbarek really deserves the kind of breaks that Björk
has received.
