With the stock of Canadian music in remarkably good health recently, few would begrudge one of the longest serving indie bands, The New Pornographers, their share of the limelight. Given their nine-year existence it's surprising that this is only their third album and it's a colourful, pop-centric affair which has been well received in the slipstream of compatriots The Arcade Fire, who themselves are no strangers to bouts of theatrical rock. One of the Pornographers' key ingredients is Neko Case whose crystal clear vocals send the likes of 'The Bones Of An Idol' on to a higher plane. Inventive piano riffs underscore two of their other best songs 'Dressed In Cobras' and 'Use It'. Yet whilst the creative lyricism and bonhomie ('Sing Me Spanish Techno' for one) continues throughout the record there's a few too many songs which are hard to remember when the music stops.
