At the beginning of their career, surely few could have predicted that Cranes would still be an ongoing concern after twenty years. Initially lumped in with the shoegazing crowd, the Portsmouth act have managed to move with the times; skilfully and craftily adjusting their sound with the only constant being Alison Shaw's impossibly youthful vocals. 'Particles & Waves' is further evidence of how they've mastered subtle electronica; providing beautiful moments on 'Here Comes The Snow', 'Vanishing Point' and 'Light Song'. Moving from the serene to the menacing, these songs are backed up by a strong title track and 'Avenue A' which prove that they aren't solely concerned with creating a "lighter than air" atmosphere. Ultimately, Cranes now sound unique and more relevant than ever.
