Formed by ex-Cure keyboard player Roger O'Donnell, 99x/10 Records is a new label giving outlet to a number of artists whose common link appears to be a taste for quirky electronic music. It is O'Donnell himself whose two moody Moog contributions bookend this label sampler. In between, there is much enjoyment to be had from the hitherto unknown cast list. The Maybe impress with their elegiac, mysterious folk music fronted by a Beth Orton-soundalike. Alka and Dead Waiter excel with their downtempo, moving electronica whilst Somonolent's more sombre musings are shrouded in a shimmering, ambient fog. Yet the two major highlights come from Pale Amber Glow whose 'New Leaf' perfectly captures the lighter, melodic moments of Mogwai and Ecce's 'South' is an elegant, subtle piece of perfection. This is a very enjoyable sampler; made of far more robust strengths than the misleading title might suggest.
