Canadians Les Amis Au Pakistan explain that their music is "based on abusrdity and fun". This is normally another name for novelty music and - in fairness - 'Espace Libidinal' does contain its fair share of moments where jocular experimentation makes for tiresome listening. More frequently, though, this is a compelling curiosity made to be admired by lovers of quirky Francophile pop. For all their nonsense lyrics, 'Beautiful Hamburger', 'Les Parties De Mon Corps' and 'Pomme Segara' all exhibit these qualities. Elsewhere, 'Je Suis Seule', the band's first recording together, sounds like a serious torch song, whereas 'Ma Jungle, Home Made' is arranged well enough to be soundtrack-worthy. The best moment, however, is the sweet fairy tale tune of 'Doux Christmas, Noel Soft', which in a parallel universe could be a seasonal alternative classic. As the entire album is available as a free download, this is the perfect treat for those enamoured of the freakiest of pop tunes.
