Sensitive souls that they are, Michigan's In Civilian Clothing surround their songs with layers of aching wonderment; boasting a frontman named Clayton, owner of one of the most tear-stained voices ever heard. 'Current Therapist' bemoans the way in which a loved one can only open up to her therapist, 'Opening Doors At The Point Of A Sword' pleads for a break in a relationship and 'Art Of Conversation' is delivered in such a tender and elegant way, it's hard not to be moved by it. These are the three best moments but in truth, it's a strong album throughout, even if the last two tracks seem to aim for the stark simplicity of a Coldplay ballad. Most of the time, the musical backdrop for each song features voice, acoustic instrumentsand drum machines but whilst its vision is a modern one - both in terms of the complexities of relationships and the understated electronica - it has a human heartbeat throughout.
