By mixing white-boy funk and soul with electronica and their own jokey lyrical matter, Hot Chip have received criticism from some quarters as a novelty act such as Goldie Lookin' Chain. Well, 'Coming On Strong' is hardly a classic but there's a serious intent underneath the geeky image they have cultivated for themselves. Their secret weapons are Alexis Taylor (an unlilkely-looking frontman but with a sweet soul voice) and a gift for the grooves and pop melodies. Listeners may have been drawn in by the singles 'Playboy' and 'Down With Prince' which are representative of their gifts for writing material which is half-mocking and half-reverential to their influences. Yet the real gems are 'Bad Luck' plus album bookends 'Take Care' and 'One One One', where Taylor adds his vulnerable tones over the most minimal of arrangements. These are the indications that a more mature sound could make Hot Chip the UK's answer to the Junior Boys.
