For Joe Sumner, the pressure for him to succeed must be immense. With Sting as his father and Mark 'Spike' Stent on production duties a cynical British press would surely start sniping if his band Fictionplane become commercial failures. However well this EP sells, though, Sumner and his bandmates can be justifiably proud of the four songs here which serve as one of the more convincing efforts in epic rock circles. 'American Standard' is a great way to start with a thrilling piano hook leading to a strong chorus, like a rockier Keane. 'Patience' is another standout and features a passionate, lung-busting performance from Sumner. To complete the set, 'Author Lies' reveals their affections for The Edge-style guitar shapes although the pedestrian 'Tolerate' spoils an otherwise highly credible effort. Somehow you think Sumner might succeed after all and - on this evidence - he deserves it.
