Comparisons with this band to Massive Attack are obvious to make; Day One hail from Bristol, are signed to the trip-hop kings' Melankolic label and specialise in loping beats and a general feeling of English alienation. However, this debut album is well above mere copying; Day One excel in storytelling which is mostly bleak but has shades of light in terms of the groove-based instrumentation and the first single, 'In Your Life'. Vocalist Phelim Byrne captivates with his narration on everyday hard-luck stories ('Love On The Dole', 'Waiting For A Break') but infuriates at times as he seems unwilling to shake off his over-Americanised accent. In the main, though, this is captivating and quite original music which demonstrates that the Bristol scene is still alive and well and brimming with new ideas.
