'Six Modular pieces' is a succint and tidy min-album
from a British post-rock group. It's a largely instrumental
affair, although what vocals there are resonate of U2's Bono. The
most impressive track here comes three songs in with 'Derailleur,
King Of The Mountain' which is based on a a simple guitar hook
with what sounds like a dripping tap in the background. As far as
experimentation goes, though, it's a little disappointing in the
same way that the overrated 'Premiers Modernes' compilation by
Air was. At best this is background music for nature programmes
about sealife, at worst it's an unadventurous and shoulder shrug-inducing
effort from Britain's answer to Tortoise although it's certainly
not without merit.
