Recorded in both London and their native New York, the first long player by Ambulance Ltd reflects a suitably varied collection of influences. Their world is one in which the Kinks'-like 'Anecdote' rubs shoulders with the shoegazer rock of 'Heavy Lifting'. Although initially confusing, after a few more listens they prove to be quite a cohesive outfit. The songs have a dreamy, faraway quality to them; far removed from the usual urban feel of a group who have spent all their time in the big cities. Cases in point are 'Stay Where You Are' (the rather fabulous single with its lilting guitar figure and lemom-fresh harmonies), 'Swim' - which doffs a cap to early House Of Love - and the "hidden" final track whose dizzying melody and doleful vocals are worthy of a much higher profile. A confident beginning from another band who have set themselves apart the usual punk/funk of the NYC scene.
