The Murky World Of Barry Adamson

Album Reviews
Perhaps the man most unlucky not to be have given licence to compose a soundtrack to a Bond film, Barry Adamson spent his formative musical years as bass guitarist in Magazine and Bad Seeds before becoming something of a cult act developing quality filmic music. But whilst 'The Man With The Golden Arm' and '007, A Fantasy Bond Theme' are made for action thrillers, Adamson sensibly refused to put all his eggs in one basket. With smoky jazz ('The Vibes Ain't Nothin' But The Vibes', 'Jazz Devil') just as much on the agenda as gangster movie pastiches ('The Big Bamboozle', 'Mitch And Andy') pigeonholing has proved to be difficult. More recently a collaboration with Massive Attack on 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' and 'Can't Get Loose' swing insouciantly and brilliantly. The most recent release on this compilation is 'Walk The Last Mile', its dark melody a move away from the more dramatic soundscapes from his early career. As a collection of real soundtracks and would-be soundtracks, 'The Murky World...' is hard to beat.
