What Light Needs

Album Reviews
'What Light Needs' is the second EP from 8yone in a matter of months. On this latest effort, released on German label Envizagae, Mathias Gorf refines his style into something that is worthy of a horror or thriller film soundtrack.

'Discontinuity FX' is a song of two levels; one is harsh and glitchy whilst the other is a smooth melody reminiscent of early 808 State. 'Enter The Unknown' is appropriately foreboding and the perfect accompaniment for a wary traveller about to enter a dark cavern in an alien location. The title of 'Wonderland', however, is not what comes to mind when one hears the dark electronica on offer, which ranges between squelching beats and a high-pitched melody. There's a fittingly terminal air to the final track as a whirring clock melody and the sound of a rope being tightened indicates something is about to break at any minute. As with all the music here, though, 8yone never quite unleashes the horror he promises making him something akin to a master of suspense.
