5th Projekt are off to an ambitious start with their first record. Interestingly, the group have split the album into seasons. Autumn, for example, is the time of year when 5th Projekt are keen to display their melancholic country influences where they sound rather like Howling Bells. From the summer season, 'In A Coma' displays all the evidence that we have a new Evanesence on our hands with a sterling vocal performance from Tara Rice but thankfully without the annoying rap interludes. It is the band's best performance on a record which switches between the strong and strident and the meandering and the muted but the steel guitar-propelled 'Broken Like This' is another outstanding moment. Over the course of an hour, 'Circadian' is perhaps a tad too long for most listeners, especially so when some of the songs unravel into fairly uneventful instrumental passages. It is, however, a good start for a band who clearly have the capability to evoke both euphoria and despair via their anthemic songs.
